Singapore, with her highly accessible Changi international airport, is an ideal starting point for a yacht charter holiday in Southeast Asia. A sailing cruise departing from Singapore can be combined with overnight journeys to neighboring tropical islands in Malaysia (Tioman, Aur, etc.) or Indonesia (Batam, Bintan, and the islands of the Riau Archipelago).
With a recently built marina the Tioman archipelago is an ideal tropical island destination for a yacht charter vacation out of Singapore. Tioman is the largest of the many surrounding volcanic islands that form the Tioman Marine Park, and offers jungle trekking, 4-wheel drive excursions, golfing on 18-hole links courses, and scuba diving on several top-class dive sites.
There are over 20 excellent dive sites dotted around Tioman. The top 3 are:
1. Chebeh, where you'll find huge boulders and swim-through tunnels
2. Tiger Rock, a submerged reef accessible only by tender and
3. Sea Fan Garden, an underwater paradise full of sea fans, glass sweepers and colourful nudibranchs.
Adjacent to Tioman are the islands of Sibu, Rawa, Pemanggil, Aur, Tinggi, Besar, Tengah Mensirip and Hujung, which all feature glassy blue and emerald green waters, lush vegetation and miles of empy beaches. At Aur island there is a stunning natural harbour fringed by beautiful white sandy beaches which is a perfect anchorage for yachts, and on Lang island a lovely lighthouse affords panoramic views of the South China Sea.
North from Tioman, some 150 nautical miles away, is the Malaysian state of Terengganu, which is blessed with some of the most beautiful islands - with some of the finest dive sites on the East Coast of Malaysia. Pulau Perhentian, the most famous, is the northernmost island followed by Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Redang, Pulau Bidong, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Tenggol.
The Riau Archipelago is Indonesia's latest tourist hotspot, set to undergo a major transformation through Singaporean investments and become a major tourism destination. The capital of the Riau administrative division is Tanjung Pinang, on the island of Batam which is barely an hour away from Singapore by boat.
Singapore will become the gateway not only to the Riau Archipelago, but also the beautiful and uncrowded Natuna Islands and Anambas Archipelago which are now also part of the Riau Province. Thousands of islands, scenic beaches, fishing and diving spots will soon open up to the cruising world so hurry and discover it first!
